The Magic of Dressing Up: Clothes as a Tool for Confidence and Play

Hi, I’m Raiva, one half of Kokomom.

Let me start with a moment I still can’t forget—

A little girl at our pop-up last month pulled on one of our yellow dresses, spun in front of the mirror, and said,

“I feel like the sun.”

That’s it. That’s why we do what we do.

Clothes have always been more than just fabric. For kids especially, they’re emotional. Transformational. Empowering.

They’re capes. Armor. Wings.

The power of play, in what we wear

When kids dress up—whether it’s full-blown superhero gear or simply picking out their own socks—they’re stepping into a role they’ve imagined. And in doing that, they learn agency.

They test how it feels to be bold. Or gentle. Or silly. Or fierce.

They learn to express parts of themselves they don’t have words for yet.

Even something as simple as a bright-colored hoodie can give a child confidence. A fluttery skirt might invite a dance.

And when the clothes fit them—not just in size, but in spirit—they shine.

Dressing up helps children test-drive feelings.

A dinosaur costume might make a shy child roar.

A soft twirly skirt might make a stormy morning feel a little lighter.

A favorite jumper might be the shield they wear on the first day of school.

At Kokomom, we see these moments as sacred. And we design clothes that support them—not by shouting, but by gently whispering: “You are free to be you.

Because when a child chooses what they wear, they’re doing more than getting dressed.

They’re making a decision. Claiming space. Practicing autonomy.

That’s not a small thing.

So yes, at Kokomom, we obsess over cotton weights and seams and sustainability.

But behind all that is something more emotional:

We want our clothes to become part of your child’s story.

Their adventures. Their memories.

Their sense of self.

Because sometimes, all it takes to feel like the sun is the right yellow dress.

3. The Kindness Jar: A 7-Day Family Challenge to Raise More Thoughtful Kids Part of the Kokomom Kindness Campaign At Kokomom, we spend a lot of time thinking about childhood. The magic of it. The softness. The wildness. The potential. But more than anything, we dream about the kind of adults these little humans will grow up to be.

Will they be brave? Creative? Curious? We hope so. But more than anything, we hope they’ll be kind.

And like most things worth learning, kindness isn’t taught in one conversation.

It’s built slowly. In rituals. In routines. In tiny, consistent choices.

Introducing: The Kokomom Kindness Jar

This is your family’s new favorite tradition. One that takes five minutes a day, but leaves a lasting impact.

Here’s what you’ll need:

A jar (or box, mug, envelope)

                       Small paper slips

                       Pens or crayons

                       A little daily intention

How it works

Each evening, you and your child (or children!) write down one kind thing you’d like to do the next day.

It could be as simple as smiling at someone new. Or picking up three pieces of trash in their classroom. Or helping a sibling with their homework.

The next morning, draw a slip from the jar—and do it.

At the end of the week, gather and talk about how it felt.

You might be surprised by what sticks.

Kindness is more than niceness

It’s courage.

It’s empathy.

It’s choosing to care when it’s easier to look away.

When we help our kids practice kindness—not just preach it—we’re giving them tools they’ll use forever.

To be better friends. Partners. Colleagues. Humans.

This isn’t just about raising good kids.

It’s about nurturing good hearts.
